Jharkhand Project
Divine Onkar Mission was set up in 1991, and originated in the eastern state of Jharkhand. Despite the development of all facilities in India within the public sector many areashave still remained desolate and dilapidated to this day. In these remote areas there is a lack of basic housing, water facilities, electricity, and food. The areas served by DOM are remote villages situated in kilometers of uncultivated land. Many of the inhabitants have no means or knowledge of producing their own food, and certainly no means of purchasing it. Often the people living in these areas have been found eating insects, rodents and even leaves. It is astonishing to know that it is hard to find anyone above the age of 30 in this region of Bihar. This is due to preventable and treatable illnesses such as leprosy,TB, polio, malaria, diarrhea, and more.
Health Care
Medical camps are organized to provide primary healthcare to the poor people living in the rural areas of Bihar. They are treated with common ailments such as Diarrhea, Fever, etc. Basic health teaching is given concerning prevailing health problems in the area, and methods of prevention. Immunizations for major communicable diseases like Cholera, Typhoid, Poliomyelitis etc. is provided. Free screening for school children which diagnose conditions such as vitamin deficiencies and the need for glasses.
Eye Hospital
Located in Ramgarh, Cantt is the ONKAR EYE HOSPITAL. The hospital is open to all poor and needy and treatment is completely free. It is responsible for restoring the sight of hundreds of people and continues to do so. Majority of the operations are for cataracts, while a few eye transplants have also been done. Other common eye diseases are also treated including Trachoma, Conjunctivitiss, etc. The charity owns two ambulances which supply much needed transport for patients living in secluded areas and for mobilization back to their homes after surgery. Eye specialists are employed to perform the operations. The hospital will eventually cater for all other general health problems as well as accidents and emergencies.
This hospital has given life back to hundreds of people. Common conditions such as cataracts which can render a person blind unless treated have deprived them of employment and a decent living for many years. Their families have suffered as a result, and submerged them further into poverty due to the lack of a wage from an otherwise able bodied person. This hospital has given their life back to them, so that they may become independent once again, be able to see their families and function as a part of society.
Training Centrex
Vocational training centers have been set up which impart Adult education in vocational fields such as agriculture, tailoring and handicrafts in order to provide illiterate men and women with opportunities for employment. Farming techniques are taught to make use of the fertile soil in the region. At the moment the area surrounding the orphanage is being cultivated with lush trees, fruits, and vegetables.
Orphanage and School
The Divine Onkar Mission has set up a very successful orphanage in Bihar called the Onkar Anath Ashram. There are currently over 100 children residing here. Many are orphans, others have severely ill parents who cannot look after them, have been abandoned by their families, used as child laborers, or have been abused. Free education, food, clothing and accommodation are given to them. Enclosed within the two storey building is a school equipped with classrooms, a computer and musical instruments. There is also a large playground situated right outside the orphanage, the area is surrounded by lush greens which are part of the agricultural development of the region by the charity.
Dispensaries
The charity has opened two dispensaries in the the largest jail and mental hospital in India. They provide medical care and basic medicines to the prisoners. The Mental Hospital Dispensary also constitutes of an eye hospital which performs surgeries on the patients and the local villagers in the area. There is a mobile dispensary which functions as a mobile medical service for basic health problems, and routinely makes trips into the remote areas of Bihar to provide care. There are two homeopathic dispensaries, one located in a local hospital and the other in the village of Palu.
Disabled Children
There is a school for the children who have become disabled due to illnesses such as polio, injury or birth defects. It also provides help to the adults. It educates and aids in their becoming as independent as possible while making them feel like a member of society.
